In the heart of the ancient Egyptian Civilization, the profession of medicine always occupied a legendary position. Healers, as superpowers and source of inspiration, were accredited by wisdom and art.

In modern Egypt, the profession of medical care started to recover after a period of weakness and fragility with the turn of the 19th century Mohamed Ali, the founder of Modern Egypt sponsored the establishment of Kasr Al Ainy, the first formal medical school in modern Egypt. For over a century, Cairo; the homeland of Kasr Al Ainy; was regarded as the city of medicine.

In mid 80's, an event has changed this time-honored rule. A hospital; specialized in the treatment of urological disease; was founded in a small town north to Cairo; Mansoura.

Herein, the story of Urology and Nephrology Center of Mansoura together with the story of its founder; Mohamed A. Ghoneim are portrayed. A story that would declare a simple fact: devotion and persistence may bring to reality thoughts which are otherwise dreams. This is the story of a dream.

The Urology and Nephrology Center was officially opened in May, 1983. Its main objective was to provide comprehensive management of disorders of the urinary system: from the surgical point of view (Urology) and/or from the medical point of view (Nephrology).

Mansoura was chosen as a site for this project since it is located in the center of the Delta region, where most of the population work as farmers and a high risk of infestation with Bilharziasis is expected. Furthermore, a new faculty of Medicine and a University Hospital are available in the same city.

The Urology and Nephrology Center consists of a main building which contains 120 beds, 80 for Urology and 40 for Nephrology. In addition, there are 12 beds for haemodialysis and 8 more for intensive care. The in-patient service is incorporated under the same roof with all the supporting and complementary facilities. In the main building, there is an operating room suite that consists of 3 rooms for open surgery and one for endoscopy. The endoscopy suite has 2 tables; one for regular endoscopy and resection, the second incorporates an image intensifier and is used for ureteroscopy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

Facilities for conventional and interventional radiology, ultrasonography and nuclear imaging are available in the department of radiology. Clinical laboratories are equipped to provide services for histology, cytology, microbiology, hematology and biochemistry.

An outpatient clinic of 6 consultation rooms is also available with urodynamic laboratory and a room for outpatient endoscopy. An ESWL machine completes the urologic armamentarium.
