Many aspects of urologic surgery have been practiced, established and developed in UNC. Most old standing activities were radical cystectomy and urinary diversion, which represented the core of clinical activities. The number of cases and the diversity of techniques first described by Mohamed A. Ghoneim and associates paved the way to many other surgical adventures. Kidney transplantation, started in 1977, was the subsequent renowned activity. At the present time, almost all fields of urology are being covered in the today's Urology and Nephrology Canter.

  • Urologic Oncology:
Since 1969, radical cystectomy was contemplated. The technique was the subject matter of many modifications; many of them were developed here, in UNC. By 2002, over 7000 cases of radical surgery for urologic tumors were carried out (more than half radical cystectomy, where kidney tumors come next and then ureteric and prostatic tumors come last). Over 3000 cystectomies and 2000 TURBTs have been performed in the center. Over 3500 diversion have been performed, less than half in the form of orthotopic reservoirs, while ileal conduits and rectal diversion represent the other half.
  • Kidney transplantation:
Starting in 1976, kidney transplantation in Mansoura passed into phases. Between 1976 and 1983, only 43 cases were carried out. Since 1983 and until the end of 2002, 1458 cases of live donor kidney transplantations were performed.
Kidney transplantation is a prototype of team work. While nephrologic service is indispensable for proper hemodialysis and preparation of the patients as well as for postoperative immuno suppression, urologists; as the operating surgeons; cooperate with nephrologists, laboratory doctors and radiologists.
  • Endourology:
The use of endoscopy in urology started as early as the turn of the last century. Effective endoscopic procedures were contemplated in the 1970's. UNC was not away from what was going on in the United States or Europe. 1st PCNL was performed in Mansoura in 1983. Since then, 38,247 cases were treated endoscopically including lower and upper urinary tract endoscopies. Laparoscopic surgery started in 1992, by laparoscopic nephrectomy. Currently, laparoscopic ureterolithotomy, prostatectomy, pyeloplasty and most recently, radical cystectomy have been all performed.
  • ESWL:
After its installation in February, 1989, ESWL unit performed more than 14,888 cases of renal and ureteric stones by the end of 2002. Three generations, MFL 5000, Toshiba and Lithotripter (s) were used. A twin-head SWL machine was designed by one of UNC urologist and will soon be commercially available.
  • Pediatric urology:
Starting from mid-80's, the subspecialty of pediatric urology was introduced in UNC. In 1998, a new ward was dedicated for pediatric surgery. Hypospadias repair, ureterovesical reimplents, management of posterior urethral valves and extrophy repair are examples of the activities in this ward.
  • Voiding dysfunction and female urology:
As early as 1976, urodynamics have been performed in the urology department. Since October 1998, urodynamic unit was established. The unit serves research in prostate management and incontinence. Since 1998, 2800 cases had invasive urodynamics, including more than 120 children less than 6 years. Over 100 injection procedures for reflux or incontinence were also performed. Over 140 female stress incontinence surgery, including complex cases and over 200 genito-urinary fistulas were performed. A new yet promising field is the treatment of post-prostatectomy incontinence, using male sling technique is on-going.
  • Animal house:
The activities going as in the animal house are subdivided into 2 types. Laboratory activities, with immunology and chemistry labs, involved in research projects entailing special immunologic or quantitative measurement, as well as animal Lab., in which experimental surgical techniques are being contemplated.
